Two WHO-TV news anchors were arrested in Iowa within one day of each other on drunk driving charges, an article by the New York Daily News stated on June 10.

On June 7, award-winning news reporter Sonya Heitshusen was stopped by police in Cedar Rapids and refused to submit to a field sobriety test. Heitshusen, 47, also avoided a breath test at the police station. The day before, news reporter Erik Wheater was also arrested for drunken driving. Police reportedly stopped the 25-year-old TV reporter’s vehicle after noticing a missing front license plate. Wheater was taken into custody after police noticed irregular behavior.

Two bars may be held liable in fatal drunk driving accident

Posted on Monday, June 9th, 2014 at 6:47 pm

The two businesses in Iowa that allowed pickup driver Bryan Cornwell to get drunk before he caused a fatal accident last June now face lawsuits holding them responsible, an article by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier stated on May 23.

The family of Kathlyn Leekley, who died in the motorcycle crash, and Derek Lee Martie both filed lawsuits against Bucketz Bar & Grill and Heartland Acres Agribition. The lawsuits claimed that the two businesses let Cornwell, 22, get drunk by serving him too many drinks. On June 22 of last year, Leekley and Martie were riding a motorcycle home from a date when they were struck by a pickup truck driven by Cornwell, who had a blood alcohol level of 0.214. Leekley died of multiple injuries days after the crash. Martie survived, although he was left blind and with a mangled leg. This March, Cornwell was sentenced to prison for 32 years.
