Posted on Friday, March 2nd, 2012 at 4:26 pm

A 20 year-old female Grinnell College student was struck by a train Monday afternoon near Third Avenue and Spring Street in Grinnell.

The girl and two of her friends appeared to have been racing the train in order to cross in front of it on foot. Two of the girls made it across, but the third girl may have fallen or tripped. The train struck her and threw her clear of the railroad tracks.

According to officials with the Iowa Interstate Railroad, the train was traveling about 21 mph when it hit the student. Her injuries have only been described as non life-threatening.
