This morning, a 41 year-old woman was killed in a freak elevator accident on her way to work.
The elevator began to move as she was walking in, trapping her between the shaft and the car. Two people inside the elevator could only watch as the elevator continued to ascend before it became stuck between the first and second floors. Firefighters were able to rescue the uninjured witnesses, but took them to the hospital for possible psychological trauma.
An inspection from the summer revealed that a defect was found in one of the elevators. The New York City Department of Buildings is planning on conducting an investigation to find what caused the elevator to malfunction.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.
